Frequently Asked Questions

Since we deal frequently with churches, here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we receive.

Q: Who can legally start a security team at their church?

A: In order to legally have a “Security” team in South Carolina, the person in charge must hold a Security Business License as awarded by the state of South Carolina.

Q: Does a church really need security?

A: The fact is that we all believe in security of some extent. We have locks on our homes and automobiles, cameras in our businesses and alarms on our out buildings. The question is not really “Does the church need it?” but rather “how much do we need?”

Q: Is it costly to have security in the church?

A: Money is most often the driving force behind what level of security we have. We can help you figure out what your budget can do for you.

Q: Are security officers the same as police officers?

A: No. Although security officers undergo training and have the same arrest power (on the protected property) as the deputy sheriff, we are limited to the property itself. We highly respect the local law enforcement and applaud the work they do in our communities.

Q: How can Security Specialist Group, LLC help my church?

A: We offer assessment and training on many levels. Each church’s need is unique, which is why we started doing what we do. Our desire is to help you order the natural so that the spiritual things of God can move freely.

Q: Does the SC law require everyone to have security?

A: No. There are different levels of protection that do not require certified security officers. We can help you set that up.

Q: If we allow the local concealed weapons carriers to carry their weapons in the church, does this cover our needs?

A: Absolutely not. Although churches and private businesses have the option to “allow” CWP holders to carry on their property, this does not cover you as a certified security team. The CWP holder is responsible for his/her own personal protection and cannot be hired out. The legal liabilities on the individual are also to be considered.

Q: Why do we need to implement background checks in the church?

A: Background checks are an organizations proactive effort to ensure that their volunteer and hired staff all are legally able to work in the areas they are assigned. In today’s society we must do due diligence to ensure the safety of our employees and children.

Q: What if we want to have a security team but have limited resources?

A: We can assist in evaluating your needs and possibly help you come up with a plan to suit your budget. We offer umbrella coverage under our license that may be just what you are looking for.

Q: Can the security team be comprised of volunteers?

A: Yes and no. The team members can definitely be volunteers, however, this does not relieve you from the requirement of having a license to operate a security team. We offer the ability to operate under our security license while using your church volunteers. We will train the individuals you select and, as long as they meet the state requirements,  you can operate within your organization while operating under contract with SSG

Q: What role does the Senior Pastor play in the security team?

A: The Senior Pastor is usually the one that determines what level of protection is needed in the church. We work directly with the pastor, or whomever they may designate as the contact person for Security Specialist Group, LLC.
